If love is a drug...then affairs are its "crack." Jake Arnett met the woman of his dreams ...but she belonged to someone else. "A Change of Needs" is a unique, atypical, often uncomfortable modern-day love story about what happens when one ordinary man accepts the invitation to cross that imaginary boundary each of us draws around our life that defines us, only to find he's not the only guest at the party. Once emotions get involved and sex is no longer "casual," the lines between right and wrong, love and obsession become frighteningly indistinguishable. It's true what they say, "the heart has its reasons the mind knows nothing of..."

Set in Raleigh and the Triangle area of North Carolina, Allen has written an entertaining, sometimes humorous, and surprisingly profound contemporary story about sex, love, friendship, betrayal, and moving forward. With a distinct and endearing style he relates some of the most common experiences of love and life in a most uncommon way. Raw, but refreshingly different and not formulaic. By no means your garden-variety romance novel. Men and women alike will enjoy this fictional cautionary tale about how "sometimes getting what you want ain't a good thing"...There is no fidelity among the unfaithful. Affairs are messy...they never end well.

A Change of Needs Nate Allen Books Reviews

Admittedly I had no idea what to expect when reading this book. Romance novel...set in Carolina...love and betrayal...another Nicholas Sparks clone? Definitely not. Allen winds a tail that is certainly not for the faint of heart. Centered around what could be described as a mutually detrimental affair, readers follow the main character down a dark path with lots of twists and turns.

The writing style is definitely non-traditional. Complex ideologies are mixed with hot and heavy romance. Self reflection, mixed philosophies, and unique character depth definitely separate this from a typical story of lust and betrayal (although there are still plenty of both). I found myself on the edge of my seat for most of the read, and as a native southerner I appreciated Allen's colloquial nature, as well as his talent for pinpoint and colorful analogies.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to any adventurous reader. Allen really has a knack for intense romance, and I hope there will be more to come from him in the future. Well done!
A love affair with the very best intentions is a messy business. Human beings with their vulnerability and their egos on the line can't help but portray an edgy narrative and a perplexing psycho drama.

Nate Allen, author of "A Change of Needs," leads us through a complex maze traveled by two opposing characters. Each has a set of needs, one to give and one to take and the opposition makes for an explosive tale.

Jake Arnett, a not-so-simple middle aged man comes from his own share of dysfunction. With an over-protective mother and a distant father, he grows up with conflicts that carry into adulthood. He's handsome, 40 something, secretly sensitive, self-assured and a bit of a bad boy, which he casually flaunts to the ladies. Divorced and a father of one son, Jake sets his sights on an unavailable woman who plays with his emotions. He wants what he can't have, and the very concept stirs him deeply.

Having one divorce behind her, Rae Anne Johnston is an attractive, earthy woman who now sits comfortably in her second marriage with stability, children and a serious case of boredom. With her needs and requirements carefully listed, she is more than ready for an indiscretion outside the boundaries of her marriage. She isn't expecting fireworks or commitment, just a playmate who will fit into her busy schedule and scratch her chronic itch.

But the best laid plans almost always go astray. Rae and Jake meet and they are both shocked at the deep connection and endless passion that sizzles between them. But for whatever reason, their affair is plagued by blatant indiscretions within their relationship. Their coupling itself is like an addictive drug and the need for possession and wicked mind games only makes it all that more challenging and enticing. Is it love or hate?

Nate Allen has a clever way of deciphering the male and female psyche, much like a narrator reading a "Dear Diary". Jake and Rae's affair and its off-shoots with third parties, fuel the story line with enough jealousy, rage, and revenge to make the reader dizzy. What starts as mundane and slightly beige escalates into a downhill race of who can hurt who the worst and all its ramifications.

"A Change of Needs" is a fascinating read for those who enjoy a psychological drama and a journey into a place that might seem forbidden but tempting.

Your book wasn't at all what I expected. I can't say that's a "bad" thing, though. It was a roller coaster ride of emotions for me, a married woman, and a keen observer of everyone around me. What I really enjoyed and found unusual in today's line up of novels is your ability to involve the reader in the journey. You speak directly to the reader and consistently so. I liked your tone and slant toward the perspective of Jake. Adding psychology to the mix was very interesting for me, and I have to say I may have learned a thing or two in the process. On a personal note I've taken Jake's journey to heart and will never look at the bar scene or any other "pick up" atmosphere the same way.
